The annual meeting of ibe .'outh Canterbury Athletic Club was continued yesterday. The sports passed oil successfully. The principal winners were Messrs LoUien, Grierson, (Julian, F. Fish, and R. {Smithson. The Ashburton County Council has determined to offer a reward of L2O lor such information as will lead to the conviction of the person or persons who have recently tampered with the water race sluices at Padding Hill. Company will be held at the Arcade Chambers to-morrow at 3 p.m. for the purpose of confirming a resolution with regard to the roluntary liquidation of the Company.

A meeting of ratepayers of the Hamstead, Netherby, and Trevor ton districts will be hold ut the Hamstead schoolroom on Tuesday evening to consider the name (dakatere) given to the new town district. if thought advisable by a majority of the ratepayers steps will be taken to change the name.
At a meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education yesterday some discussion of a conversational character took place as to the advisableness of building two small schools at Rangilata instead of one larger one; finally the Board decided to obtain further information on the subject. A special meeting of the members of the Ashburton Fire Brigade was held at the Fire Brigade Station last evening for the purpose of presenting a long-service medal to late-Fireman W. H. Sando. There was a fair attendance of members, and the Captain, Mr G. F. Scott, occupied the chair. The Chairman, in making the presentation, complimented the recipient npon his long and creditable connection with the Brigade. The Chairman also referred to the medals, the property of the Brigade, held by Mr J. C. Dolman. He said Mr Dolman’s conduct in withholding medals from those entitled to them was most reprehensible. It was difficult to understand what object Mr Dolman had in view in defying the law and the authorities, but be might be quite sure that the obstinate freak would not redound to his credit or advantage* Mr Sando, in acknowledging the presentation, also referred to the medals held by Mr Dolman. He staled Mr Dolman bad boasted tbat ha (Mr Sandoj should not receive a raedil; but, thanks to the exertions of the Brigade, the contemplated injustice had been averted. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings.

It is gratifying to note that two Ashburton lads, sons of Mr John Buchanan, of the High School, have won considerable distinction in connection with the recent scholarship examination. In class B, Master Alfred Buchanan tied with Miss Hilda Lewis for first place, beating 36 o‘her competitors. In class 0, in which the-o were only three competitors, Master Bdgar S. Buchanan was first, and secured the only scholarship. These yonng geu'leraen left the High School some months ago, and entered at the Ashburton Borough School in order to make themselves eligible for this examination. Their distinguished success r> fleets the very greatest credit upon the tutors of the High School and upon their own industry. We trust their example may be emulated by the youth of the district. In the course of a discussion at a meeting of the Ashburton County Couccil to day Mr E. S. Coster stated that a trout weighing over 21bs was taken out of a water race below Lauriston, about 20 miles from the intake, a few days ago.

The Wellington City Council last night decided to postpone for three months the striking of a threepenny rate fc Hospitals and Charitable Aid purposes, in order to ascertain whether it is possible to raise the requisite amount by voluntary subscription. They also decided to agree to the resolntim of the Christchurch Council, objecting to advertising on telegraph poles in the city. Mr W, H. Messenger, who for some time was lessee of His Lordship's Larder in Christchurch, has been arrested in Victoria on a charge of wife desertion. The Defence Department have secured the services of a man thoroughly conversant with laying submarine mines, and in a short time he will enter on bis duties as Instructor to the Torpedo Corps in that special department. With regard to the New Guinea question, it is understood that the New Zealand Government is willing that Queensland should undertake the administration of affairs in that Island. At a conference of representatives of School Committees in the Otago district, it was resolved to recommend Parliament to abolish cumulative voting. A number of other alterations in the machinery portion of the Act were recommended. We remind intending purchasers that the privileges in connection with the Autumn Meeting of the Ashburton liacing Club will be sold at Mr Alfred Harrison’s auction rooms to-morrow at 2 p.m. As the meeting promises to be the most successful yet held by the Club, and a largo attendauce is expected, the various lots should realise full prices. A motion for the division of the Ashburton riding of the Ashburton County into two ridings will be dealt with at the next meeting of the County Council.
