Auckland. Colonel Lyons reviewed the Volunteer forces in the Domain on Saturday afternoon. There was a good master. The Pharmacy Board of Auckland have held the examinations prescribed by the Board, and the following passed the third standaid examination, and are entitled, if 21, to enter into business : Dodder, Christchurch ; Hill and Firth, Auckland ; Whitefield, Wellington.
Mayor W. Waddell, received a magnificent present from Captain Ardigi, of the Japanese corvette Tekuha, in recognition of the kindness shown to the officers and crew on the visit of his vessel to Auckland. The-Mayor also received a present for his Excellency the Governor, which he will forward at the earliest opportunity to Wellington. The second election for the Takapuna Licensing Committee resulted in the Good Templars* candidates being again returned. There was immense excitement, and it was the hardest temperance contest yet held in Auckland. The Gareloch, which was in collision with the Herald in the Manukau harbor, arrived here for repairs. The Rowens, in crossing the Hokianga bar, had her galley carried away bodily, and the stove driven into the saloon, which was filled with water. Two large cans of oil were emptied in the sea, but to no effect, as the sea broke over the vessel in tremendous volumes.
The South Carolina, cutter, was blown out to sea at Port Charles, and has not been heard of since. It was in a disabled condition, and two men were on board. The ’schooner Saxon, from Lyttelton, had a perilous voyage. During the gale the steering apparatus gave way, and the vessel was in a hopeless condition. The bulwarks were broken to clear the deck. Ofl Portland Island saw lights as of a vessel in distress, but the weather was thick, and could not be sure of it. The Board of Education resolved to give School Inspector Peacock six months’ salary in lieu of notice. Wellington. The surveys for three more sections of the North Island Main Trunk railway are being pushed on, and Government hope to have the contracts out shortly. One section is fifteen miles from the present contract at Te Awamutu, and the second is eleven miles from the present contract at the Marton end. The third is a tunnel contract about the middle of the line. The following tenders have been received for the Lincoln-Little River contract for the formation of permanent way and station buildings ;—Accepted : A. Swanston, Christchurch, L 15,488. Declined: J. Coates, Palmerston South, L 13.908; R. Carmichael and Son, Christchurch, L 14.217; Stocks and Wallace, Christchurch, Ll 6 709. Within the last few days the Defence Office have received no less than seventyeiaht offers from new Volunteer corps, offering their services. Instructions have been received from some of the English legatees under tbe will <>f the late Mr James May to institute proceedings against Mrs Rhodes for the recovery of the Bank shares transferred to her by Waring T>ylor in settlement of an amount appropriated by him from the Rhodes estate, while acting as trustee. The value of the shares so transferred was about L 12,000. The action will corns before the Supreme Court shortly. The whoie of the applications for space in the home industry and fine arts departments of the t'ew Zealand Exhibition been received About 800 persona have applied for space in the former, while 206 have made application in the latter.
The following telegram has been received from Russell, by T. W. Lewis, Esq., Under-Secretary of the Native Department. Wellington:—“Tawhiao and other Waikato natives return home coday. Tawhiao’a visit, on the whole, I consider, has been a failure so far as the object of getting Ngapuhito acknowledge hi* sovereignity is concerned. Hone Hongi, Kingi Hori Kiri, « ith most of the other leading Nagpuhi cheifa, refused to do this or to join him in any way. Strange to say the only new rubjects are the late followers of the prophetess Maihai. Kaniti, whose guest Tawhiao has been for the last week' fell out with him over the signing of their treaty of alliance, Tawhiao signing with the prefix of Kingi to hip name. Kaniti seeing this refused to sign unless this title was omitted. The Waikatos firmly refused to allow this to be done, and were about leaving in anger. To prevent a complete rupture, after a long debate, Kaniti signed under protest, rsserving his right to object to the objectionable title on any future occasion.—

The jury attached a rider condemning the inadequate way the wharf was lighted, and the danger to the men loading vessels on dark nights. Friday night, when the accident happened, was dark and tempestuous. About seven o’clock on Saturday evening Stephen Walsh, storekeeper, Hatters Terrace, Nelson Creek, iwas drowned while trying to ford Nelson Creek on horseback. The creek was flooded at the time. His body was found this morning about twenty-five chains below the ford he tried to cross. The horse was found the same aide of the creek bo went in at. He was drowned almost in sight of his own home. He leaves a widow and one child. Grey River was at very high flood on Saturday evening, having risen very rapidly. All the lower portion of the town is under water. Dunedin. The weather being fair to day the passengers perJLrawa with their luggage were taken to the Quarantine Island. After their effects have been fumigated they will be admitted to pratique.
