AN AMPLE APOLOGY.
[»T TELEGRAPH.] Nelson, To-day. The criminal information for libel preferred by Mr James Sclanders, merchant. Nelson, against Thomas H. Mabin, average stater, of Wellington, was heard yesterday- The libel was said to have occurred in a letter sent the accused to Messrs Shaw, Saville and 00., charging Mr Sclanders with having forged a document. At the close of the evidence the Magistrate intimatrd his intention of committing the accused, whereupon the defendant's counsel asked for an adjournment to allow him to ask prosecutor to accept a free and ample apology, which he believed Mabin proposed to make. Mr Fell for the prosecution made no objection, but said the apology must be of the most ample description and absolutely unqu Jified. On the Court resuming, Mr Fell read|a{comp!ete apology and offered no objection to withdrawal. The Magistrate said he felt some difficulty in allowing the withdrawal, but he would be sorry to stand in the way; of the undoubted leinency shown by the' prosecutor. He then discharged the defendant.
