TKZ.BOKAMS —COPYRIGHT.] Monetary and Commercial. London, Sept. 20. Consols remain at and the Bank rate of discount at The market rate is 2%. The total reserves in notes aed bullion in the Bank of England is 14,600,000. The proportion of reserves to liablities is 47 per cent. New Zealand securities remain at the quotations telegraphed yesterday. Colonial breadstuff's and tallow remain dull, and prices are without quotable change. Hides are dull and slow of sale, with a downward tendency. The Wool Sales. At to-day's auction a quiet tone again prevailed. The catalogue comprised 11,900 bales. Since the opening of the series 34,300 bales have been withdrawn from sale. The Mails. The homeward mails per Orient steamship Liguria, from Melbourne (August Bth), were delivered to-day at Naples.
Mr Gladstone Returns. London, Sept. 21. Mr Gladstone arrived at Gravesend yesterday from a yachting cruise in the Baltic. The Wool Trade. The total amount of wool catalogued since, the opening of the present series was 299,000 bales. [Received Sept 22, 12.20 p.m.] Arctic Exploration. London, Sept. 21. Professor Nordenskjold, the Swedish explorer of the Arctic regions, recently returned from his expedition to Greenland, and reports the interior of that country to consist of an ice desert of enormous extent, the existence of which was previously unknown. Loan Conversion. The Bank of England announces the following New Zealand loans to be forthwith converted into four per cent, inscribed stock, viz.:—Four and a half per cent., 5-30, 1879-1904 loan, L 6,000,000 1 Five per cent. 5-30, 18811906 loan, Li,250,000; and Five per cent, floating loans amounting to Li,802,000, making a total of L 9,082,000 to be converted.
The Croatian Revolt. Vienna, Sopt. 21. The latest reports from Croatia state that that province is still in a disturbed state. Serious anti-Magyar disturbances have taken place at Kretz, a town near Agram. Troops were called out to quell the outbreak, and fired upon the rioters, ten of whom were killed and a number seriously injured. A Grand Review. Berlin, Sept. 21.
A review of a large body of the Imperial troops was held to-day at Hamburg near Frankfort-on-Main, before the Emperor William. The spectacle was a grand one, and was witnessed by King Alfonso of Spain, who is on a visit to the Emperor, and the English princes now in Germany.
