The Melbourne Manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited, reports of the local grain market as follows - Wheat market quieter and weaker; shipping wheat, 4s tod to 4s ndj fowls’ wheat, 3s gd to 4s 3d; malting barley, firm at 5s 3d to 6s 3d. The market is active. New Zealand oats are in fair demand at 2s nd to 3s 2d tor feeding, and 3s 2d to 3s 3d for milling qualities. New Zealand oats, under bond, 2s 2d to 2s i;d. A serious railway accident occurred last night on the line to Essendon, near thFs city, at 9.45 p.ra. The Melbourne train had reached Newmarket, when the signals were found to be defective, but the driver proceeded under orders from the signalman, who, however, turned the train oh to a couple siding, where it ran into a cattle train. The shock was a terrible one. Twenty passengers in the Melbourne train were injured, two somewhat seriously, but most of them were able to proceed to their homes without medical attention. Smallpox. The doctor of the steamship Duke of Westminster, just arrived from London, is suffering from smallpox, and the vessel, which is bringing immigrants to this colony, has been ordered to quarantine.
