DISCOVERY OF A CANTERBURY GOLDFIELD.
We learn from our own correspondent that a fine specimen of gold quartz was brought into Methven yesterday afternoon, which is said to have been found in the neighborhood of the Hakaia Gorge. As may be imagined, the discovery has caused a tremendous amount of excitement in the township, and a prospecting party was immediately got together and they were to start away to the supposed goldfield early this morning. They go fully equipped with all the neces-ary requirements for a prolonged encampment, and it is to be hoped that they will return with the welcome news that a payable goldfield will be opened up. Old miners in Methven, judging from the quartz brought in, anticipate great things for the future, and are sanguine of the success ef the venture.
