COURSING.

ASHBURTON COURSING CLUB. The third meeting of the season was held yesterday, when, despite the unfavorable aspect of the weather, a large number of horsemen and people in vehicles assembled on the Lagmhor estate. The first pair of puppies were in the slips shortly alter nine o’clock, and operations were commenced in a paddock just on the opposite side of the Ashburton bridge. Some half dozen hares were put up in a reasonable space of time, but they were so wild that it was impossible to get the dogs sighted, and it was after twelve o’clock before sport actually commenced. On the ninth hare being put up Kiss-me-Quick and Plato were slipped, but the former did not get sighted and a no-course was conseqently the result. After this it was decided to move in the direction of the Westerfield mill on to some high and dry ground. Here hares were found to be plentiful, and a little genuine sport was met with. The first good course was between Butterfly and Pericles, resulting in a win for the Rakaia dog. In the All-Aged Stakes, Duchess of Connaught and Salopian were slipped away to a very strong hare, and by far and away the best course of the day then ensued. The Duchess led up and worked so well that at one period she was nine points a-head. In making a drive tor the hare she unfortunately got a nasty spill, allowing Salopian to come in and reduce the score to one point. _ The Duchess then came in, and making a clever kill, won a very long course by three points. Several other courses were got off in the same paddock, but hares again becoming difficult to get at sport had to be postponed till this morning, a start being made for Lagmhor soon after eighto’clock.
