The market for New Zealand oats is steady; feeding sorts are quoted at 3s to 3s 3d; milling ditto, 3s 3d to 3s 5d ; New ‘Zealand oats, under bond, 2s 4d to 2s Bd. Hurricane in Samoa. News has been received here that a destructive hurricane and earthquake occurred at the Samoa on March 24th (sic). Many vessels were totally wrecked, and two deaths occurred from drowning. Shipping. Arrived Messageries steamship Natal, from Marseilles, last evening; the Orient steamship John Elder, from Plymouth, April 7th, this evening, Sydney, Yesterday. Arrived, yesterday—Waihora, from Auckland. The Tramway Difficulty. The Government have decided not to stop the running of steam tramways, pending Parliamentary action in the matter. A Bill has been prepared to legalise the use of steam motors. [Received May 23, 12.40 p.m.] Undesirable Colonists. Melbourne, To-day. The Premier, Mr James Service, has telegraphed to the Agent-General, instructing him to protest to the Imperial Government against the proposed deportation of Phoenix Park informers to Australia.
