[rKUTF.r’s TELEGRAMS —COPYRIGHT.] Massey’s Frauds. Melbourne, Yesterday. The Dunedin Municipal frauds are attracting considerable attention here. Three well-known Melbourne brokers, Were and Son, Wilder, and Griffiths, have been victimised to the extent of L 3,500. It has been ascertained that Massey’s wife sold Griffiths some waterworks debentures in the name of Louisa Allen. The coupons were subsequently paid in London. Messrs Were and Son sold fifteen debentures, paying cash to the amount of Li,S94, which Massey’s wife accepted in the name of Lucy Brown. Massey then obtained a draft on New Zealand for L 690. Wilder also purchased thirteen debentures, paying L. 1,365 cash, and Massey got a draft for Li,i6o on Christchurch. , [Received Jan. 9,2 p.m.] Sporting. Melbourne, To-day. The entries for the Australian Cup and Newmarket Handicap, to be run at the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting in March, are somewhat below the average. The numbers are—42 horses for the Cup, and 73 for the Handicap. The New Governor of New Zealand. Adelaide, To-day. Sir William Jervois left last night for Sydney by the P. and O. steamship Clyde. Several farewell addresses were presented to His Excellency before his departure. Chief Justice Way has assumed the Acting-Governorship.l The Wreck of the New England. Sydney, Yesterday. The Marine Board of enquiry into the circumstances attending the wreck of the steamship New England at Clarence River Heads concluded today. The Court found that the vessel was lost through the negligence of Pilot Smith, and ordered that his certificate should be cancelled.
