[per press association.] Sudden Death. Auckland, To-day. Edward Walker, bootmaker, dropped dead at Onehunga yesterday afternoon. The New Roman Catholic Bishop. Father Luck, just appointed Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, is of the Benedictine order. Father Luck, of Waikato, is his brother. The offertories at St. Benedict’s Church yesterday amounted to L 440. In Readiness. Wellington, To-day. The Opunake detachment of Constabuary are in readiness to proceed to Welllington for artillery service. The Precious Metal, Greymouth, To-day. A gold bearing reef has been struck in the Working Miners’ claim at Langdon Hill, Paparoa Range. This is the third claim in which an auriferous reef has been struck, and is a different reef from any of the others, showing that there are several in the hills. The gold is not visible to the eye. A sample has been brought to town, and it gave good prospects when crushed. A Fatal Swim. Balclutha, To-day. A distressing and fatal accident took place here about eight o’clock yesterday morning. Fergus Fergusson, teller at the Colonial Bank, and Robert King, of the National Bank, both went into the river, which was flooded with snow water. They swam across, and on their return Ring was seized with cramp and reached the bank with difficulty. He missed Fergusson shortly after prating with him, and ho was not seen after. Fergusson was a young man and unmarried. His father is a clergyman of Glasgow. Another Fire. Grant’s Temperance Hotel was burned down this morning at seven The fire is believed to have originated in the dining-room. The cause is unknown. The building, with the whole of its contents, was consumed. The building was insured for L 250 in the Standard office, L 250 in the Norwich Union office, and L3OO in the Victoria office. The furniture was insured for L2OO in the South British. The estimated loss is L2OO.
