PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] The Home and Colonial Mails. Wellington, To-day. The 5.3. Australia with the May English mails, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 4th inst., one day later than time table date. The City of New York, with the May colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 13th inst., two daya earlier than time table date. A Schooner in Distress. Wesitobt, To-day. A schooner is anchored off the north beach, floating a signal for a tug here. Her canvass is blowing to ribbons. If the anchor holds the vessel she will bo safe. The sea is too heavy for the steamers _in port to go to her assistance. The opinion is expressed that she is the Fleetwing. No Power. Christchurch, To-day. This morning an application for a publican’s license was refused to the Kendal boarding-house, which had previously held a wine and beer license. The ratepayers at the local option poll had decided that no new licenses should bo granted, and the Licensing Committee of Christchurch North held that they had no power to grant a publican’s license. Deferred Payments. Dunedin, To-day. Over 600 deferred payment settlers signed a petition in favor of Mr Connell’s BUI. An Unfortunate Letter. The Education Board decided to dispense with the services of Farnie, one of the Normal School teachers, for writing them, reflecting on the new inspector.
