The Governor has placed Government house at the disposal of the Commodore and officers of the H.M.S. Nelson, during her stay here. Rewi and the Land Court.

It is reported here in Alexandra that Rewi proceeds to Waitara to stop the Land Court there if possible. Wanted—Ll.ooo Wellington-, To-day.

A deputation from the Now Zealand Rifle Association waited on Mr Bryce this morning, asking that the Government grant should be increased to LI,OOO, so as to allow the value of the prizes to be increased. The deputation mentions that in future the meeting of the Association would be peripatetic, and probably the next would be held at Dunedin. Mr Bryce replied that he could not at present give a definite answer, but would bring the matter before the Cabinet. He intimated, however, that in the event of the LI,OOO being granted, he would not sanction any further grants by Government in aid of the purchase of tents, etc. Educational.

The Education Department has promised liberal support towards the esta blishment of a Girls’ High School in Wellington. Suitable buildings are also obtainable at a low rate of interest. The Westport.

The 5.3. Westport has been beached alongside the Akaroa wharf. Some of her bow plates are stove in and jagged. The ship is in an excellent position, having settled on a level keel.

At the R.M. Court, Hasoldon, a solicitor, proceeded against Mr Tyrrell, proprietor of the Westport Star, for libel. After the plaintiff had given formal evidence, defendant commcened to crossexamine him, with a view of showing the statement he published to be true. The plaintiff declined to answer the question. The Acting Magistrate (Mr Baker) upheld him The case was adjourned till the 26th, to allow the defendant to obtan professional assistance. Haseldon is the only solicitor residing in Westport. Mr Bishop, of Wellington, intends to commence practice here. The ground for the libel action was commented upon in the open column of the Star upon Haseldon’s defence of the case of Powell v. County Council, in which the Council was defeated.

Drowned in a Dredge. Dunedin, To-day.

The body of Walter Bridges, fireman, was found in the well of the new dredge this morning. Deceased was missed during the night, and it is supposed he fell into the well, striking the buckets. Ho leaves a wife and five children, entirely destitute.
