[per reutbr’s agency.] Elected. Melbourne, Yesterday. Mr Harper has been elected member of the Assembly for East Bourke, vice Mr Ramsay, deceased. Steam Communication. It is announced that the Peninsular and Oriental Company has inaugurated a service between Antwerp and Australia. The first steamer to leave the former place will be the Sutlej. Oats. New Zealand oats have advanced about id per bushel during the week, and are now quoted at 4s to 4s 3d for feeding, and 4s 3d to 4s 4d for milling sorts. No Drawback. In the Legislative Assembly to-day the Commissioner for Trade and Customs stated that the Government did not intend to allow a drawback upon barley imported for malting. The Comet. Melburone, To-day. A comet was visible here shortly after sunset yesterday. Remission of Taxation. In the Legislative Assembly last night Mr Francis submitted a resolution setting forth that the proposed remission of taxation, as announced in the Treasurer’s Budget, was inconvenient and undesirable in view of the improbability of there being any surplus at the end of the present financial year. Mr Francis declared that he did not intend that his resolution should be deemed a vote of want of confidence in the Government. Sir Bryan O’Loghlen moved the adjournment of the debate, and the House rose. Interrupted. Adelaide, Yesterday. The overland telegraph line to Port Darwin is interrupted.
