In response to a message from Tawhiao, all the Europeans here assembled at Whatiwhatihoe this morning. The weather was magnificent. After waiting some time they sent in a messenger asking when the korero would begin. Te Ngakau came out and said; “I have come out to announce, just as the Native Lands Court does, to all assembled here that the Court is opened, but will be adjourned till tomoirow, in accoi dance with all your European usages.” On expressing disgust at this proceeding and asking the reason, it was alleged that some of the Ngatimaniapotos had not arrived, but it is believed the chiefs are anything but agreed as yet as to what time should be taken. Wakanui strongly opposes all land selling, and it is understood that Rewi has been persuaded to modify his recent utterances about submitting titles to the decision of the Court at Wahanui. He would like the titles ascertained, but always in the past surveys have been allowed by the sale of the land. If he could see a way of securing the land, he would not be strongly opposed to its opening, but they have been so often deceived by the natives soiling when the Crown grants were obtained, that he is fearful of taking any step towards making native titles negotiable. In Gallagher’s case the jury returned into Court at 8 15 last night, with a verdict of “Not Guilty,” and the prisoner was discharged ; this being the last case, the Court adjourned sine die.
