REAPER AND BIDDER TRIAL.

A trial of two new Headlines was held to-day in a paddock jusli at the corner of East Belt, belonging to Mr Hay T. Smith. Messrs Twentyman and Cousin, the agents for the respective machines in this colony, were represented by Mr Twenty - man, junr., who, assisted by the makers’ representatives, worked the machines and thoroughly explained their merits. The paddock chosen was a fair one, containing a medium crop of wheat, and from the work shown, the machi les must shortly come into very general use by our farmers, as their simplicity, combined with strength, will always tend to make them popular. The first machine under notice was the Howard’s Simplex, an English machine made by the well-known firm at Bedford. It is a string binder, and has many improvements of more or less] value.overother kinds. The other machine was of American manufacture, and known as the “ Buckeye” wire binder, made by Aultman, and contains Hiller’s patent attachment. To this machine the string binder can be attached at an extra cost of only L 6. On close examination, some very noticeable improvements are perceived, and the careful way in which its various parts—simple in themselves—yet, to the uninitiated so wonderfully complicated, were explained by the attendant, made those present thoroughly convinced that this machine is one of the simplest yet manufactured. Both machines worked extremely well, and the sizes of the sheaves, particularly those from the string binder, were all that could be desired.
