[per reuter’s agency.] The Willow. Melbourne, Yesterday. The cricket match between the English team and the combined eleven of Australia was resumed to-day. The first innings of the latter closed for 320. Horan scored 124 and Palmer 34. The English went in for their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn had put together 238 for seven wickets. Following are the scores: Ulyett, stumped, 23; Barlow, stumped, 33; Bates, caught, 47 ; Selby, caught, 70 ; Midwinter, caught, 4 ; Emmett, bowled, 6; Shrewsbury, bowled, 16; Scotton, not out, 13; Shaw, not out, 14. Extras, 12. Total, 238. Peate and Pilling have still to go in. The match will be resumed to-morrow. A New Proposal. Melbourne, To-day. The Argus to-day publishes a leading article on the subject of a cable tariff between Australia and New Zealand. It approves of the action of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce in endeavoring to obtain a reduction of the rates of the New Zealand cable, and condemns the existing anomaly, under which the tariff is greater from than it is to Australia. The Argus proposes that the colonies should act jointly to increase the subsidy paid to the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, with a view to obtain a reduction of tariff.

Breaking Up. Sydney, Yesterday. Owing to the high sea on the coast, the steamship Wotonga is rapidly breaking up, and all hope of saving her has been abandoned. The cargo and passengers’ luggage are already lost. Obituary. Mr J. H. Williams, United States’ Consul at this city, died to-day. Small-Pox. Adelaide, Yesterday. It has transpired that one death from small-pox occurred on board the Orient steamship Garonne before she arrived at the Cape. .
