for Lyttelton, the ground of objection being that several aliens voted for Drowned. Dunedin. To-day.-; At Waikiouati a boy named Childs Vris drowned while bathing in -the river. Washed Overboard. The Star publishes a letter- from a passenger per the Waitangi from Port Chalmers to London. The writer states that on September 7th, during the height of a gale, the ship was struck by several seas which did a good deal of damage. All the passengers were ordered to the stern cabin. . Mrs Johnston and her child were the only steerage passengers, and they were brought aft out of bed; but she persisted in going back for her clothes. She had hardly done so when two cross seas broke on board, carrying away the house on dock, with Mrs Johnstone, the quarter r master, and the second mate Received severe inj uiiea while trying to save them. A Deaf and Dumb Forger. The Supreme Court opened to-day. Judge Williams congratulated the Grand Jury, on: the fact that there were no serious charges. Herbert Vincent, deaf and dumb, was sentenced to two years for forgery. The prisoner had been previously convicted. No bills were returned against John Stewart, for larceny as a bailee, and Mary Ann Weston, for manslaughter. James Wilson, aged 17 years, was convicted of larceny, and sentence was deferred. '
