Sir William Meets Bryce. Sir William Fox passed through this morning to meet Mr Bryce at Oeo. The Mount Somers Contract. Wellington. To-day. The following tenders have been received at the Public Works Office for permanent way extension contract, No. 2, main line to Upper Ashburton :—James Cranston, Dunedin, L 3,667 (accepted.) The following were declined ; —Jesse Coates, Palmerston South, L 3,949 11s ; Stuart and Lamb, Christchurch, L 3,976 9s lOd ; McGrath and Co., Christchurch, L 4,309 7s 2d ; John Stenson, Lyttelton, L 4,427 17s 4d. A Denominationalist. New Plymouth, To-day.
Major Brown addressed the electors of the town last evening. He declared himself in faver of a Land tax as introduced by Sir George Grey, and assistance being given to denominational schools. He was in favor of a limited protection to local industries. A vote of confidence was carried.
Scratched. Dunedin, To-day. Mr Larnach has retired from the contest for Dunedin.
