LICENSING COURT.

ASHBURTON.— To-Dat. (Before Messrs Wood, R.M., Ward, Cox, and Winter, Commissioners.) Robert Little applied for a renewal of license of the Hindhope Hotel, Hinds.— Mr Purnell, for the applicant, said that the case had been adjourned for objections to be lodged. No notice of objections had been lodged.—Sergeant Felton objected that the applicant was not proper person to hold a license. Defendant had been twice convicted under the Licensing Act, and had also been convicted of using abusive language. His house had been badly conducted.-—Mr Purnell urged that all the convictions arose out of one transaction. Defendant had already been fined for that offence, To deprive him of his license would be to inflict a serious, punishment on him. Besides which it was too late for anyone else to apply for a license, and if the house was closed it would be a serious inconvenience to the residents, in the neighborhood, and would be sure to lead to sly grog selling there. He might also state that the complainant against Mr Little had himself since been convicted of vagrancy. The Court might caution Mr Little, or grant him liberty to effect a transfer of his license. Applicant bore a good character in his neighborhood.—The Beiich considered that the applicant was not a proper person to hold a license, especially in anout of the way neighborhood.—Mr. Wood, R.M., said that as a Magistrate he would grant a temporary license, but the 1 Bench would not grant the usual licenSa omless the transfer was at once made.—Sergeant Felton said that there was no objection to a transfer to Mr Baldwin.—The Court : was adjourned until to-morrow, for the temporary transfer-to be effected in the meantime. ;
