[per reuter’s agency.] Attempt to Escape. Melbourne, To-dnjn James Henderson, the reported owner of the steamer Ferret, alias India, made an attempt last evening to escape from Pentridge gaol. He had filed away the bars of his cell window, and had succeeded in making his exit from the cell when he was discovered by the warders, and again placed in custody. He now stands committed for trial on several charges of conspiracy in connection with the Ferret. An Ingenious Contrivance. Sydney, June 10. A local mechanic has succeeded in fitting a sculling boat with a sliding seat which acts as a motor, in a similar manner to that of the boat in which Hanlan rowed the race for the championship of the world was alleged to have been constructed.
