[per press association.] The Loss of the '* Policeman.” Auckland, To-day. An enquiry into the loss of the schooner Policeman is proceeding at the Police Court. A Case and its ContentsAt the Resident Magistrate’s Court today, Mr Barston gave judgment in the case of Hiffman against the captain of the ship Peru for damage to a piano, lie held that defendant wus only liable for the case or packing, and not for its contents, when the latter was signed for as unknown. The plaintiff’s must show the contents in good order, and not leave it to inference. He believed in this instance the contents had been tampered with, and gave judgment for the value of the case, 20s. Frozen Meat. Carterton, To-day. Mr Buchanan, the President of the Pastoral and Agricultural Society, is calling a public meeting here to consider the advisability of forming a company to erect the necessary machinery for shipping frozen meat and dairy produce to England. A Mining Accident. Dunedin, To-day. A man named Thomas O’Kane, a miner, was killed by a fall of earth in his claim at Moki Creek. Committed for Trial. Harry Charles Meade, for attempted suicide, was committed for trial. Sudden Death. Invercargill, To-day. Charles Fairweather, one of the oldest settlers in the district, while driving through the town to-day, fell back in his dray, and expired almost -instantaneously.
