ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE

An ordinary meeting was held last evening. Present—Dr Stewart (chairman), and Messrs St. Hill, Hodder, Fell on, and Andrews. correspondence. Inward correspondence received included the following;— From Mr H. Cape Williamson, requesting permission to use the schoolroom foi the teachers’ meetings.— Granted. From Mr H. W. Perryman, thanking the Committee for their vote on the Board of Education election, and tendering services on future occasions.—Letter to be acknowledged, with thanks of Committee. From the Board of Education, re recent election of member for Board, giving result of same; re savings bank; enclosing revised regulations respecting pupil teachers ; re extraordinary vacancy on Board, and forwarding candidates nominated ; re examination of pupil teachers, giving list of s accessful candidates.

BREAKING A LOCK. It was reported that Mr Stuart had broken the lock of the lobby door of the school in forcing an entrance, he having left the key at home.—lt was resolved—- “ That the value of the lock be deducted from his salary. ” caretaker’s salary.

The salary of the caretaker was fixed at L 35 per annum.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. The Secretary was directed to write to the Board re frosting the infant school windows, gravelling of walks, and planting of trees around out buildings, and general formation of school ground. EASTER HOLIDAYS. It was decided to close the school for Easter holidays on Good Friday and Easter Monday. A FAILURE. It was resolved —“That, as Mr Stuart has failed to pass his examination, and has thus lost one year of his term, the Committee would suggest to him as to whether it would be worth his while to remain as a teacher, or whether some other vocation would not suit him better. ” COMPULSORY CLAUSES. Mr St. Hill gave notice of motion to bring the compulsory clauses of the Education Act into force forthwith. The Secretary was requested to write to Sergeant Felton for a list of children not attending school. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Eobinson and Andrews were appointed Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. master’s report. The master’s report showed the average attendance for last week of quarter ending March 31st was 294, and the highest average attendance during the quarter 315; number on the roll at end of last quarter, 410. ACCOUNTS, Accounts amounting to Ll 7 16s were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
