September 20: Prior to the District Convention, the Executive met in the Ladies' Parlour, St. Paul's Methodist Church, Hamilton, Miss A. McLay, President, in the chair. Si v Unions were represented. McLay’s organising work had borne much fruit, Hamilton Union having been re-organised, a new Maori Union having lieen formed at Hangitiki, and a Maori “Y” branch having been formed at the Hamilton Girls'. Convention rejiorted on by Mrs. York most interestingly, also the great Rally held on Temperance Sunday evening after the Church services, in St. Paul’s Methodist Church. Mr. McKinney, N.Z. Alliance organiser, sjxike on the work of the Alliance, and stressed its financial needs. He spoke of the dangers of parts of the legislation now l>efore Parliament in the redistribution of licences, and extension of hours of sale. A "First Aid” lecture was given by Mrs. McLeHan, Lady Superintendent of ihc local St. John Ambulance. The use of bandage- was demonstrated by Ambulance Si-ter Morrison. Afternoon tea and Benediction closed the afternoon’s gathering. TARANAKI DISTRICT Hawera, August: D»ep sorrow expressed at the news of Miss F.’sie Andrews’ death. Mi-s Andrews had visited the Union -cveral times and her talks in the schoo’s and colleges of the district had been greatly esteemed. Her last one had been written of in the Journal as the he.-t -peech given that year. Members stood m sympathy with her r-.latives. Sympathy was also expressed with Miss Kirk :■ the passing of lin gifted brother. Professor H. B. Kirk. Sympathy extended to Mrs. Tarrant in the death of her sister. Guest speaker, Mr. H. Atmore. October: Mrs. dayman, President, presided and led Devotions. Letters were read from Miss Elsie Andrews’ sister and from Miss Kirk in reply to letters of sympathy. A letter of thanks received from Dr. Gilbee, of England, for a parcel sent by us to her for distribution. Mrs. Cumming gave the District Convention rej*>rt. Maori Day observed by the President r-ading a pa{*cr about work amongst the Maoris. It was pleasing to know that over fifty young Maoris in hostels in Auckland had signed the pledge.
