“AMERICAN TEA.”

Under the auspices of the Carterton W.C.T.17., a most successful afternoon was held at Mrs Cotter’s, High Street, on Wednesday, March 30th. It took the form of an “American Tea.” and was held in aid of for the Union. There was a good display of gifts, such as product, jam, etc-., and the Sale resulted in the sum of £4 Os. lOd. being netted. \ Tl.cie were about 40 ladies present, afternoon tea was served. Mrs Tyler presided, and spoke briefly, then asking Mrs Raine, delegate to the District Convention, to speak. The most important facts from Convention that Mrs Raine spoke on were:—• How Miss Kirk had spoken of a number of instances in which the W.C.T.U., as a whole, has been successful in bringing about reforms, namely:—Votes for Women; Protection of women and children; Ladies' carriage on the trains; the cleaning up of Rest Rooms; Juvenile Courts; Authority to have the Court cleared in certain cases. Tho Two-Issue Ballot Paper was also discussed, and each Union is prepared to do their part. Mrs Peryman spoku on the urgent need for Headquarters in Wellington. The fact stressed most was that if there was a central Building, it would be a big aid to the Union in their work. Mrs Raine proposed that the Dominion Executive assess the amount to be raised for Headquarters for each Union. It was carried. The speaker was thanked for her very interesting report. A subscription list was for the Headquarters Fund, and responded to very willingly. Decided to hold on Friday, April 2 9th, an afternoon in aid of Headquarter’s Funds, members to bring articles made by them, not costing more than one shilling, and the best one to be given a prize; and all articles to be sold. Hearty vote of thanks to the Hostess.
