Tamati Reedy
Fullbright scholar and Maori Affairs asst, secretary, Tamati Reedy returns soon from teaching at the Unviersity of Alabama. He says he has been particularly impressed with the open manner in which racial issues and problems are discussed among people and the media in the United States. Dr Reedy left New Zealand mid-way through last year to take up his Fullbright Scholarship at the University of Alabama. Last year he taught an anthropology course, ‘People’s of the Pacific’. This year he taught courses in linguistics.
While in the United States Dr Reedy has been explaining Maori culture to his study groups. One major problem he says is to break down the myth perpetuated by the Maori that their culture is incompatible with Western culture. “...it is not enough to be educated in one culture Western to be a New Zealander. The Maori should study their own culture too. It provides for a balanced person...”
