Bumps of the Month
VARIOUS ARTISTS Artcore/Ambient Jungle (React)
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Sampled by Link from Ferris Bueller, this sums it up. This is the sound of now. THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS Exit Planet Dust (Virgin) If you don’t already own it, shift ass and prepare to purchas. An intoxicating brew of chopped up, trip-hoppin’, rock ’n’ rollin’, sample heavy, electromagnetic genius. VARIOUS ARTISTS Cafe Del Mar Volume 2 (React) Volume 1 was an ambient revelation, and this is just as good. A beautifully diverse album, with my pick going to the inspirational ‘Feel Good' by the Deadbeats. SIZE 9 I’m Ready (Virgin) More maddness from Josh Wink. Check the remix for a cool hip-hop breakdown and the largest snare roll you’ve ever heard. Rulin’. VARIOUS ARTISTS Dope on Plastic 2 (React) The first one was one of the first and best trip-hoppy compilations (and they just keep coming), so there are high expectations for this. While per-
haps it dosen’t reach the heights of volume 1, it’s still very good. METHOD MAN On the Tical (Def Jam) OL' DIRTY BASTARD Return to the 36 Chambers (Elektra) CHEF RAEKWON featuring GHOST FACE KILLER Only built For Cuban Linx (Loud) Three of the first four solo Wu-tang albums, 01’ Dirty Bastard’s drunken fist style is unbeatable, and Method and Raekwon are lyrical black belts backed by the production mastery of RZA. DJ Muggs is in awe of this shit and so should you be. MOBB DEEP The Infamous (RCA) Havoc and Prodigy write and produce their second album, an intense, hypnotic and often bleak hip-hop masterpiece, featuring guest spots from Q-tip, Wu-Tang’s Chef Raekwon and fellow New Yorker Nas.
