WELLINGTON Hipside continue to move a shitload of vinyl through their doors in literally minutes, as up to 30 DJs, hustlers and wannabes crowd the store and fight for the top tunes ... in recognition of the ever increasing vinyl market, a new shop has opened on Lower Cuba Street called Bassment 45. Owned and operated by five .local entrepeneurs (none of whom are over 21), they are stocking vinyl and clothing. Check out the mad Tribal and THC gears for a dope summer look ...
Dean and. Paul from the Bassment are also behind Cybernetic Industries, responsible for , such immortal parties as Cyberdrome, Regenerator and Kromozone. (Jungle) Dean is well respected as Welli’s original hardstepper, and leads the drum ’n’ bass vibe, having played at a Roots Foundation sound system, Tatou (a mistake, in hindsight) and Sunnyside Up. Dean (DJ Omni) has also managed to get himself signed to the Moving Shadow promo list ... speaking of Sunnyside Up, they have regrouped as Kickin’ Afro Lies, located above ESC, and feature residents Mu and Cian, and weekly guests each Friday night ... question: what do you get when you mix first year Victoria Uni students, alcohol, a heavy meal, the Trustbank ferry and a
choppy evening on the Wellington Harbour? Answer: a first class chunderfest, as witnessed by Tatou DJs Clint Smiley and Jon Jamison from behind the decks. Jon was apparently so impressed, he’s planning a similar boat party sometime soon ... check out Phunk Republic at ESC on October 7 — mad hip-hop flavors brought to you by Kozmo and crew ... the mighty Roots Foundation go dubwise on October 13 at ESC, featuring MU, Goosebump, Lemon and Salmonella Dub and Darktower ... first news of new year’s eve celebrations is a big open air party at Edward Street, with Tim Simenon (Bomb Da Bass) as star DJ and Roots Foundation upstairs at ESC ...

NAPIER Good Buzz Productions hosted a three room, multi-cultural extravaganza called Sola-Rise, featuring the talents of Andee from Flipside, Conspiracy and the Man Anatomic (ex Auckland and Adelaide), as well as an impromptu appearance ■ from Flic, to fill in for three Auckland noshows. Drum ’n’ Basswise IV went off at Bob on September 30. Watch for. more jungle parties ... Stomping, at The Club, was well attended, with two rooms, both playing hard trance, and a hockeymasked DJ who was moved to punch someone out for interfering with the turntables. Fair enough, too ... the third Nick D'Angelo organized Cheap Sex party at Squid was a sell out, with a number of punters getting kicked out for actually doing it.
