Fine Work Of Radio Church Must Not End
("Record" Dunedin Reporter) Tt Seems certain station 4ZM will sign off in March next. Whether or not the Radio Church of the Helping Hand signs off, too, remains to be seen. No one wishes to see’ that happen. A mass meeting is to be held in the Dunedin Town Hall soon, which will send an appeal to the Prime Minister early in December, asking that the undenominational Radio Church be conserved: Suggestion is that every person suporting the church should send a telegram to the Prime Minister along those lines. Together with the Central Mission relief organisation, the Radio Church has been a power for good in the community. During the dark depression days, thousands of people received ac sistance-food, colthing, firing, the last brought from camps at Maungatua. Besides its Radio Church, the organisation has formed the children’s health camp at Company’s Bay for old people and for children (this Christmas 70 youngsters will be catered for specially); burial fund for the
poor; nurses’ fund to send trained nurses to homes during the period of a mother’s confinement. Greater ambition in the promoting mind of the Rev. Leslie B. Neale is the establishment of eventide homes where elderly people may live in comfort in their declining days. This project, despite the cost of £50,000, will materialise, says Mr. Neale. New children’s wing, apart from the Saltzman and the Neale wings, is contemplated at the Company’s Bay site. The home as it stands today cost £36,000. The amount of overdraft is £5,650, roughly half of which had been advanced privately-Mr. Neale has done his bit-and the remainder through the Dunedin Savings Bank, An appeal is being launched for all supporters to contribute. something that will enable this debt to be wiped off.
