"THE number of books that have been written and are added to each year upon the subject of radio communication is not surprising in the light of the ever increasing interest shown in what is probably the most interesting portion of the whole radio field. But it is a matter for comment that a fair proportion of these books traverse the same ground and follow practically in each other’s footsteps without adding anything in the way of facts or viewpoints. Ladner and Stoner’s "Shortwave Wireless Communication," however, the third edition of which is now to hand, certainly does not fall into this category, This book set out from the beginning to give the fundamentals of short-
wave communication technique, and succeeded so well that it soon occupied an almost unique position in the field. In the English language there seems nothing which covers so much ground in the same way or with such practical thoroughness, The matter in the third edition has been brought up to date still further by the inclusion of results of recent research, and the fact that little, if any, has been omitted shows that the original matter was particularly well chosen in the first place.
