’ IRST taking up music at 12 years of age, and making a success of it, is the record. of Miss Bessie Pollard, of Christchurch, and she is now one of theofficial accompanistes at 8YA. Miss Pollard studied under Mr. Ernest. mpson, taking her theoretical work under Dr. J. C. Bradshaw at Canterbury College, and is now in the middle of her Mus, Bac. degree, Miss Pollard has been doing solo work over the air from 8YA for the last seven years, but orchestral work is much more to her liking, and besides writing.all the parts she is leader of the Bohemian ‘Trio and Bohemian WNovelty Quintette, which two combinations have delighted listeners on many occasions. Miss Pollard is a performing member of the Laurian and Aeolian Clubs in Christchurch,.and offi+ cial accompaniste of the Orchestral Society. In 1924 she won the Gold Medal Championship at the Christchurch Competitions for Piano, two years previously gaining ‘the highest -honours in New Zealand at the Trinity College Exhibition Senior Hxamination.. Miss Pollard has many pupils who have gaineil honours in their examinations, amongst them Joan: Boniface, who gained — her A.T.C.L. when 15 ‘years of age. Listeners have often heard this young performer during Aunt Pat’s children’s hour. Although such a busy young woman, Miss Pollard looks forward ever y Christmas to her six weeks’ engagement with her Bohemian Trio at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, and during the last vacation they had the ‘honour of playing wefore (he Duke of Gloucester,
