Cathedral Bells to be Relayed at Midnight on Christmas Eve-General ‘Meeting of 3YA Radio Stamp Club a Great Success — Special Christmas Programmes From 3YA.

A LONG and interesting programme has been arranged for Christmas Eve from 3YA-the usual band hour from eight to nine, with vocal interludes by Mr. Claude O’Hagan, bass baritone; the light popular programme following will be contributed by Jock Lockhart, comedian, Miss Agnes Shearsby in piano novelties, and Phillip Wynne-Yorke, the -popular baritone. Ten o’clock heralds a theme programme entitled "Music of Home,’ which will be narrated by Dr. Robinson B, Hall; continuous music following, and at 1140 pm. there will be a short programme of Christmas recordings. At midnight a_ relay of the Cathedral bells, which will be followed by a reading of the prayer by the Very Rev. Dean Julius, the station closing down at the conclusion of this short service. "THE general meeting of the 3YA Radio Stamp Olub, which took place at 3YA last week, was attended by about 80 members and a number of adults, and was the most interesting yet held. After the reading and confirmation of the minutes, and the roll-call, a few minutes talk was given by the newlyelected president-Uncle Dick-and when various questions had been answered by Mr. Vernezoni, the rest of the time was taken up by an entertainment which was an unqualified success. Aunt Pat and Cousin Nessie worked up the enthusiasm of all present by a community sing, Mr. Vernezoni proving a most popular "comic conductor." Two character sketches in full dress were given by Misses Beryl Baggs and Joan Masters, songs by Master Peter Hubble and monologues and comic recitations by Uncle Dick and Mr. Vernazoni. ‘THE usual treasure-hunt took on a much more convenient form, as instead of the previous method each boy — or girl was handed a little envelope containing five different stamps. Readers of the "Radio Record’ who have postage stamps that they can spare are specially asked to put them in an envelope or box and kindly post to Aunt Pat at 8YA; to those who have not attended the meetings, no idea can be given how much enjoyment this part of the entertainment gives to the children. ‘Arrangements have been made to hold a pienie early in February. SUNDAY programme will be observed by 3YA on Christmas morning, but during the afternoon progress reports of the Plunket Shield cricket match Canterbury vy. Auckland will be broad- ‘cast,-and at 7 o’clock a review of the ‘day’s play will be given, From 7.30 to 8 p.m. will be a relay of a carol service from the Christchurch Anglican Cathedral, followed by a concert programme, including items by Mr. J. Alexander Browne, the visiting Australian baritone, and Mrs. Tristram Willcox, con-

tralto. Appropriate Christmas record ings will be presented during the programme, the day’s broadcast ending with a special B.B.C. epilogue. FAULT occurred on the 11,000-volt line supplying power from the P.W.D. Addington sub-station to the Banks Peninsula Power Board, and in consequence 38YA Was off the air for a few minutes about 10.45 p.m. one night last week. Except for a sudden flickering and dimming of household lights, no other interruption was noticed. On several occasions 3YA has had to rely on its emergency supply since the change was made to Gebbie’s Pass, and the plant has proved adequate. PROGRESS reports of the four-day cricket match will be given during the holidays from 3YA, with reviews of the day’s play at 7.35. After a concert programme of light and popular music on Boxing Night, the one-act drama entitled "Kidnapped" will be presented by that popular and talented couple Bernard Beeby and Miriam Osborne. Later a further. episode in the lives of a Japanese house boy and his employer, entitled "All at Sea," will be given. De. JAMES MOFRATT’S broadcast address from St. Paul’s Church recently at the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Christchurch Presbytery, was very clear indeed. In fact, listeners had the advantage, as Dr. Moffatts voice did not carry to all parts of the big church, and many of the congregation were unable to catch all of his sermon. This distinguished: Bible scholar translated the Bible into modern language, and his speech was an example of the broadminded Christian. Dr. Moffatt intends. visiting New Zealand again, and he opened his

address by remarking that he did not feel a stranger to Christchurch, as his first parish had been near Riccarton, in Ayrshire. THE final concert of the year of the Male Voice Choir was relayed: by 38YA from the Choral Hall on Saturday, December 15. The Cathedral Choristers assisted the choir which was conducted by Dr. J. C. Bradshaw. At the conclusion of that relay and after the sports summary, 3YA passed over to the old time dance music session by the Evans-Campbell Band. | "THE Two Masqueraders," who were scheduled to appear on Saturday, December 22, from 8YA, in three numbers, are unable to do so, and in their place the Domino Duo will contribute several items. The 3YA Orchestra, Mr. George Titchener, comedian, and Miss Wileen Johnstone, soprano, in popular songs, are on the same programme, 3YA is to be the station from which Dr, J. B.
