The Latest in Fashions For Film Stars
ACCORDING _to ‘Travis Banton, Paramount’s fashion designer, who recently held a mannequin parade of hig latest screen fashions, skirt lengths have not changed at all. The popular length for evening is to the floor, dinner dress: to the instep, and daytime
around nine or ten inches from the ground. In reply to a query about colours, Mr. Banton gave the reply-‘All the colours on the wine card.. The clarets, the burgundies and the deeper shade of port are favourites. Chartreuse for evening wear cannot be eclipsed. And black, first, last and always. . Then there are the field greys, shading into taupe, that are in tremendous popularity, and the darker shades of brown -not the reddish browns. , "The fashionable figure forms a triangle, still, whose apex is the feet, and the shoulders are still widened and emphasised, although not. so markedly as before. Instead, the accent is being brought down closer to the waistline, and achieved by concentrating:. fur, for instance, in- wider, ‘softer. collars across the bust." ": woh During the parade, sevéral of the Paramount stars and featured players displayed frocks, coats and pyjamas designed by Mr. Banton. One partigularly outstanding gown in chartreuse satin was worn by Claudette Colbert. This gown was of superb cut, flaring from a close fit about the hips to a sweeping width at the toes. ‘The. bodice was novel in the fullness it displayed across the deep round back. Wide shoulder straps and an artificial flower matching the gown were noted. In the way of a wrap for this charming gown, Miss Colbert wore a tiny jacket in a deeper shade of velvet, tied at the back and boasting leg o’ mutton sleeves, which topped the shoulders in tiny stiffened points. — _ Two new materials used by Mr. Barton. were a ribbed taffeta that resembled corduroy, seen only in black.in a dinner gown, and a blistered dull crepe satin, also shown in black for dinner wear. Both have excellent wearing: qualities.and will be popular in coloars as well. . a The finale and feature of the evening was the wedding party, complete with pages and flower girls, all turned out in orchid satin except the bride, portrayed by Frances Fuller, who will be seen in the Paramount picture "One Sunday Afternoon" with Gary Cooper. and whose long-trained gown was of lustrous heavy satin, beaded with pearls at the wrist of the long, tight sleeves, and in a V pattern on the bodice. Pleated ruffles of the material outlined the low-necked gowns of the bridesmaids, and formed "dust-ruffles" extending into brief trains. PRONOUNCHE it "Vorzhahk," Ann Dvorak urged Maurice Chevalier when she stepped into the leading feminine role of "The Way to Love" at the Paramount studios. . Maurice then called her "Ann."
