Service in Poverty Bay Inadequate
ert ree ee Relay Stations Preferred to more powerful "‘A’s" A correspondent from Wairoa submits, after having contacted the majority of listeners in his distrcit, that the Broadcasting Board should aim to give all listeners one programme free from interference; that the "B" stations should be more strategically situated and should relay "A" programmes; that power interference and heterodyning problems should receive, attention, and that the power of purely local stations should be reduced. He reports :>- ‘Notes on Radio Reception in Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay LYA-Day fair. Night fair, but at times badly heterodyned by 4RK, Rockhampton. 2yYA.-Day very good. Night good, but fading and distortion fairly constantly. Can be received day and night all the year round. 8YA.-Day fair in winter. Night steady, but with a high noise level. No good in summer. 4YA.-Day, no reception practically. Night good and steady, subject to static not being too heavy. 2YB.-Day, vo reception practically. Night weak, fades, distorts and het. Auckland "B’s," 1ZR and 1ZM.-Sometimes fair, mostly unreliable with fading and distortion; no practical reception from the others. 1ZJ and IZM.-Steady days; night but with high noise levél. Not practical for general reception. . 27P.-Local. Good reception day and night. 27H.-Best outside station received here. Perfect day and night receptior. but has sometimes been hetd. lately in spite of several changes of frequency. ; 2Z..-Nearly as good reception as 2ZH, but not so powerful; well operated or run. Hetd. and occasional fading and high noise level. 270.-Generally unsatisfactory. ©ZO and F.-Day and night is steady. but very weuk. 27ZW.-Splendid station, but frequently gives quick fading, and is very badly » hetd. both sides. 3Z0.-Good, but weak and hetd. 3ZR.-Weak, but free from hetd. 4%71,-Very good, with occasional fades. _4ZP and other 4’s.-No practical use, Submission of Wairoa Listeners 1. Consider the Board’s aim should be to provide all listeners with oné station which will give day and night reception free from static, distortion and fading, provided a reasonably powerful receiver is used. 2. Submit strongly that country listeners should be put in position as above, before any "B" stations in the cities are subsidised. 3. We favour relay lines to near "B" station with rebroadcast rather than an increase of power of "A" stations. 4, Ask that attention be given to locating and correcting local power leaks and that suitable detecting apparatus be provided. 5. Ask that a reciprocal agreement be arrived at with the Australia (and iE possible the Japanese) authorities as to the issue and "policing" of waveengths. . 6. We suggest that a solution of the heterodyne question, especially for Zealand stations which clash and possibly also for the Australians, might be to decrease the power of those stations which are intended for purely local service. Also suggest that much might be done by an extension of the priuciple of several stations using the same frequency at different times. 7. We request that either 2ZP or 24H be connected with the "A" stations by land lines, and that an "A" station programme be rebroadcast nightly from 6 o'clock; and we say :- (a) That 2ZP would be the more suitable if it can serve Poverty Bay as well as Hawke’s Bay. (b) Otherwise, that 2ZH is the more suitable to serve the whole of Hawke’s Bay, but whatever station be chosen, it is imperative that it be allotted a wavelength which is free from a heterodyne,
