Hamua
The annual Catholic social in aid of the church funds was held in the Hamua Hall on the evening of July 23 (says the Pahiatua Herald). The social is always the most popular event of the year, and this one was no exception to the rule. Visitors were present from all parts, a particularly large number being present from Pahiatua. The hall was prettily decorated with evergreens and lycopodium, the stage being draped in red, white, and blue. An interesting programme of songs and recitations was gone through, the following contributing:—Mr, D. Connor (Nireaha), violin; Mr. Lewis (Pahiatua), song; Miss Taylor (Pahiatua), recitation; Miss Dempsey (Pahiatua), song; duet, Misses Connor (Nireaha); Mr. J. Golder (Foxton), humorous songs and recitation (encored); Mr. Andrews (Eketahuna), humorous song (encored); Master J. Walsh (Pahiatua), recitation (encored); and Mr. Walsh (Pahiatua), musical monologue. The accompaniments were tastefully played by Miss Tuckwell and Miss McKenna. After an excellent supper had been handed round Mr. J. McKenna briefly thanked all who had in any way contributed to. the success of the evening, ; and apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Rev. Father Harnett. On all sides were heard comments on the success of the evening, which must have been gratifying to the Misses Dougherty and Golder, the energetic and hardworking secretaries, and their committee of willing workers. .
