Gisborne
(From our own correspondent.) " i - ~ / - July 18. The Bible-in-Schools controversy is still carried on in a desultory fashion in the local press, but since the Government intimation that no legislation would be introduced this session for the taking of a referendum, little interest is evinced locally. Rev. Father Lane, assisted by' members of the Catholic Federation, have actively canvassed Gisborne for signatures to the petition now in circulation, and fully 1000 names have been obtained, which is a very good result for this district. , .'I ■■- • ■> ■ .; i ■:; A social gathering is to be held on July 24 in aid of the. convent fund, and keen interest is being manifested in it by the friends of the good Sisters of St. Joseph. Father Lane kindly permitted a special collection to be. taken up at the church door on behalf of the project, and a fairly substantial amount is in the hands of the committee. July 27. The social gathering organised in aid of the funds of the local Catholic school was" successful beyond all expectations. The school, so ably conducted by the Sisters of St. Joseph, will benefit to the extent of £132 10s, and this constitutes a record for any similar event hitherto held. Rev. Father Lane, speaking at Mass on Sunday, thanked all those who had assisted to make the affair so distinct a success, and specially mentioned the hard-working secretaries (Misses M. Neill and Haughey). " ■- : V
