DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH
(From Our Own Correspondent.) September 12.* Tenders are being, called by the architects to close this month for the erection of Nazareth House, the new and permanent institution of the Sisters of Nazareth in this city. Acting on on invitation from the President-Gene-ral of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris, the President of the Superior" Council of the Society in Sydney, in a circular letter, solicits the co-operation of all the Conferences of Australia and New Zealand in the possible organisation of a pilgrimage to, Rome and the Holy Places during the Jubilee year of his Holiness Pope Pius X. Intended primarily for members of the Society, the pilgrimage, being the first such to leave these lands, would afford an excellent opportunity to others of joining by associating themselves with the Society. At the invitation of the executive committee, all those connected with the recent Living Floral Carnival assembled at a musical evening at the Art Gallery on last Wednesday. The gallery was nicely furnished for the occasion. The programme was contributed to by the Rev. Father Moloney, S.M., Mrs". Cherry, Miss Winnie Brick, Miss McGillicuddy, Mr. J. R. Hayward, and Mr. Fred Wauchope. The balance sheet, which was read by Mr. W. Hayward, jun. (secretary), gave in detail the profits of each stall, and other sources of revenue, which approximated a 'net credit balance of .£746 us Bd. He sincerely thanked all the workers at the carnival for the great assistance rendered in bringing about such a satisfactory result, and especially the /joint secretary, Mr. Aspell, for his efforts, both preparatory to and during the carnival. The Rev. Father Hoare, S.M., congratulated all concerned on the great success attained, which was clearly the result of strenuous effort and a proof of love and fidelity to parish and priest. When asked to assume control of^the carnival he did so with reluctance and pleasure combined. Inexperienced as he was he felt the task would be a difficult one, but his feelings in this direction were overcome by pleasure in being asked by their late revered pastor to undertake the duties. He also knew the people of St. Mary's, and with the promise of their help and co-operation he entertained no misgivings as to the result. _ He expressed sincere appreciation of the work of all connected with the carnival, and made special reference to the lady stall-holders and their assistants. A main feature of course was the entertainment portion, with which they were both x agreeably surprised and well satisfied. The success of this department was mainly due to the efforts of Mr. Fred Wauchope, wfro, they trusted, would be frequently heard of in connection with other similar enterprises both in the Dominion and beyond. He had much pleasure in presenting Mr. Wauchope with a cheque from the committee. Choice refreshments were handed round, after which a particularly enjoyable social gathering terminated.
