We regret to report the death of Mr. Hugh Gourley, an old ami highly esteemed .resident of Dunedih, who passed away at the, age of 81 years. 'Mr. Gourley was a native of Ballinahihch; County Down, Ireland. In 1852 -he came out to Australia, and spent about ten years. s in. .Victoria, principally in Geelong. He came to • New" 1 Zealand" in i-861,- attracted by the discovery v of gold in Otago. After spending some time 1 in Central Otago-hc returned to "Victoria, and brought back his family to New Zealand. He started in business in Dunedin,- among his other- undertakings being ■ a ,li&e'" Qf coaches to Port Chalmers. For" a long' time he had". begii"^ Identified with -public offices in Dunedin. 1 As Mayor of St. Ril-da for many years, as a member of ,tho City Council, and eventually as v Mayor of the Cfity of Duhedin, as a "member of the Otago Harbor Board and 1 as its chairman for a long series of. years, as ra«-mem.ber of the" Benevolent' Trust ,for a very lengthened term, as a visiting justice of the gaol; as a,- member of the Legislative Council- for seven years, avi-.'l in other capacities his activities covered a very wide field. The deceased was a broad-minded man, awl always Ilie most cordial relations 1 with his Catholic fellow-citizens. *- -" - _ _ -
