October 22. St. Anne's Guild, a society of the matrons of the parish, under the presidency of Mrs. Dennehy, held a sale of work in the girls' school on last Thursday afternoon. The attendance was good, and the business done more than satisfied the anticipations of the promoters.

St. Mary's branch of the Hibernian Society held ~\ its quarterly Communion at the nine o'clock Mass yesterday. There was a fair attendance. Rev. ( Father a Bowden, M.'A., officiated and preached an instructive ' sermon from the Gospel of the day.

Mr. E. G. Kerr, one of the most widely known and respected men in , the district, died atr his residence last Tuesday morning, and-was interred on Thursday afternoon. The funeral cortege was a very large one. The deceased gentleman had at one time taken a leading part in all local affairs ; he was proprietor of the ' Timaru Herald ' till ' his decease, • under his * direction its columns. were never disfigured by sectarian influence.
