new member was elected - and two candidates . proposed. The programme consisted of a debate amongst the junior members of the club, the subject being, ' Should the ; totalisator be abolished ? ' . Mr. T. Barry opened for the affirmative side, and was supported, by Messrs. C. Carmine and T: Heffernsw. Mr" Arthur Fraser led foi\. the .opposing side, and was supported by Messrs. W. Hassall and . M. J. O'Connor. Some of the speeches made were most interesting and quite up .to senior „ form, the young members showing that they had studied the subject. - The judges* decided that the' affirmative . side had the best of the argument.
In connection with the matter- which formed the, subject of a deputation to our Member, prior to his departure for Wellington to take up his Parliamentary duties, the Very Rev. Dean Carew has received the following reply from the Hon. Hall- Jones, Minister for Railways :— ' With reference to your letter of the" 14th ult. in regard to the issue of free school season tickets to pupils attending the Grey mouth Convent High School, I have the honor to inform you that I have ha-d this matter looked, into, and I find that any tickets issued free to_ children attending Catholic secondary schools . were obtained free under a-misappre-hension and contrary to the spirit and intention of the railway regulations, and upony the matter coming -under notice the practice erroneously commenced had to be stopped, and 1 regret that it cannot ' be "reinstated, - as Catholic secondary schools are no included in the ' Manual and Technical Instruction Act, and scholars are not therefore entitled to free tickets,' Furtherrepresentation is to be made to our member on the subject.
At the invitation of the members of the St. Columba Hockey Club a large number assembled in the club rooms, the occasion being a banquet to celebrate the win of the St. Columba Hockey, Club " in 'the West Coast junior championship. Dr. J. W. Mcßrearty, who presided, referred to the excellent record put up by the team in its first year by winning the West Coast Hockey Association's Junior Championship. -In presenting the cup to the captain of- the team, the chairman wished them every success in future years; and trusted that when they met again next year, it would be to receive the senior cup ; for, as they all knew, the junior team had acquitted themselves in such a creditable manner, that in the next competition they would have to play in the higher grade... Mr. Thos. Barry (captain of the team) in responding said he felt proud at being captain of a team that had aoquitted itself in such a creditable manner. He trusted that by assiduous practice they would, as the chairman predicted, be enabled to meet a^gain this time next year to celebrate their win in the West Coast senior championship. Dr. Mcßrearty also presented Mr. J. O'Reilly with a gold scarf pin, given by Mr. W. h! Finney for the most improved player during the season'
