DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(From our own correspondent.) October 12.

It is intended to mark the ninth annnersary of tho oonsecrajtion of his Lordship the Bishop in a special manner on Wednesday, November 15. Hopes are entertained for the reco\ery of the Very Rev. Deian Foley, who is still at the Mater Misericordi'ae Hospital. The school opened recently by the Sisters of St. Joseph at Taupo for the Maori children has proved an unqualified success. At the commencement of the new year Ithe Rev. Farther Smiers is to open a school at Whangarei over which the Sisters of St. Joseph will preside. Hi-gjh Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's last Sunday, followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during the day until evening, when there was a procession of the Blessed Sacrament' ,

The Rev. Father Kehoe, of Parnell, has, I regret to say, been very unwell, but is recovering slowly. At tine Cathedral last Sunday the officers and men of the Alufiitrian man-of-war, ' Panther,' attended 11 o'clock Mass in large numbers. They are certainly a very .fine body of men. Their coiuMict and bearing while in Auckland have won for them general admiration. The Very Rev. Father Chme and Rev. Father Me Dermott left last Tuesday for Napier, ■ where- they will give a mission. They win return to Auckland, and in Octobterr of next year give eunottiher mthssion in ihe cathedral and other city churches. The annual mortuary service will be held in the SymcttwTs street Cemetery 'oni the "first Sunday after All Souls' Day. Notices have been sent out to those who have relatives buried in the osmetery asking them to p*nt the graves in order. His 1 Lordship the Bishop in a recent annousneament relating to the impxovermentts in the cathedral, told the congregation that he had received intimation from Mesdames Hackett and Payne, and from the Dignan family to, the effect that each of them intended to present the cathedral with a stained-glass window. Retv. Father McGrath, C.SS.R., is now conducting a retreat for the inmates of the Home of tile Little Sisters of the Poor, PonsooiWy. Next week he will devote a Sew days to the retreat ,of the boys at Takaip^toa Ortphanage, and on Sunday, October 22, he opens a mission at Whangarei. His Lordship the Bishop left last Saturday for Hamilton and Camlforid'ge. In both townships he administered the Sacrament of Confirmation. Rev. Father McDerxnott, C.SS.R., had spent a fortnight there prior to the Bishop's arrival, and had assisted the local priest, Rev. Father Darby, and the Sisters of the Mission, in preparing the children. Very Rev. Dean Lightheart, Superior of the Maori Missio/n, who wemt Home to attend an important meeting in connection with the Order of St. Joseph, is expected to arrive here on November 20 This will prove very acceptable news to the Very Rev-. Dean Ligh tbcart's wide circle of friends, not only in Auckland diocese, but in many parts af New Zealand. The mission at the Sacred Heart Church, Ponsonby, was brought to a close last Sunday evening. Throughout it was conducted by Very Rev. Father Clume and Rev. Father JVlcGrath. It was a most p/ronounced success. The Masses at early morning during the fourteen days of 'the mission were remiarkaJbiy well attended, whilio during the day the mi'ssi,'on.ari'es were busily engaged in the confessionals. Jn the evenings the church was crowded. Last evening a very sxiccessful 'At Home ' wa9 held in aid of St. Mary's Orphanage, Ponsonby, at the Orphanage, New street. The attendance was excell/ent, a|hd all tWoxouigiily en-jotyed themselves. \A committee of ladies worked very hard to ensure the success advicved, and Mrs. J. J. O'Brien amd Miss Lily Casey proved indefatigable honorary secretaries. '
