ONEHUNGA
The Rev. Father Mahoney, Onehirnga, writes as follows with regard to the report of his -reception, which appeared in our issue of June 22 :— ' I am reported to have saia " I was not sent to Onehunga. . . as a reward for labor, but because I was senior pnest to Monsignor O'Reil'ly." What I did say was that " I was not sent to Onehungaj etc., altogether as a reward for past labor, but because I was also next senior priest to Monsignc- O'Reilly," so you see what a difference the omission of a few simple words made. The reference of course was to the fact that Monsignor O'Reilly was the only immovable rector in the diocese, and I as being the next to him in length of sen ice in the diocese, was the first eligible for the vacant rector a te of One^hunga,, the only other immovable rectorate in the Auckland diocese at present.' Our reverend and esteemed correspondent supplies the following interesting item of information regarding the Onehunga mission : You may be interested to know that the founlder of this mission was a namesake of yours, Rev. E. J. Clery, an elder brother of MajorGeneral Clery, who fought in the Boer war. Father Clery was the predecessor of Monsignor Paul, and left Onehung.a four England in 1856, where he died a.s rector of Chicester only a few years ago.'
