ST. PATRICK'S SCHOOL, WAIMATE.
The distribution of prizes |of the above school took place on Thursday, December 15. The Rey. Dr. Kennedy, of Meamee, was present witji the local clergy. Aftjen 'a few musical items by the pupils; the Rev. Father Regnault asked Dr. Kennedy to distribute the prizes. In tihe course of a few words of congratjullation anid advice to the. QhiMren Father Regimult referred to the siaciifioes made in their behalf by their parents, who, besildes contributing their share to the sfctyport of the public schools of the Colony, have for conscience saJke to bear tihe whole burden of tihe education of their own children in a Catholic school. It is well knowto that any help or grant they ask for from the Government is not for the purpose of teaching religion, but for seculax instruction. Catholics save the State close on £60,000 per year, and only a fraction of this amount is asked for to help them to educate their children. So reasonable i's this demiarid that it was stu'staihed by a commission of statesmen appointed about twelVe months a,g,o to inquire ioito the working of tihe whole system of education in New South Wales. Should this reasonable demand be granted, it is quite clear tjh&t neither priest nor bishop nor OatSiolic people c,o(uld object to tihe introduction of Bible-teaching in public schools. Rev. Father Regnant concluded by wishing the children a happy Christmas and an enjoyable holiday. / The following is the prize list :— Standard Vll.— Shorthand medal, M. Bartos ; general proficiency, M.
