A crowded audience packed the Totara Hall on Y\elncsday evening, isovemner !l, on the occasion of Uie annual entertainment in aid ot St Patrick's Con\ent School '1 he peilormair-e was one oi the bo-st of il -. kind held in Koss 'Hie orchestra, led by Rev. Father Aubry. ahd aided by Misses G. McDonald, M. Stillnan, I. Sullivan, X Daly, and Master C. Ross, opened eai h part witJn a selection, and won the commendation oi tbc audience, The [iniirrammc, wliuh was a lengthy one, was most enthusiastically rcconed, encores being the order of the evening. \iiss llealy sang ' Rose of my lite ' in good style. Mi.hs Brook's (me \ okc was heard to adMfuntjge m ' Island of di earns ' and ' Killarney.' A piano duet was nicely played by Misses K. Allen an-i J. Adamson. Mr. Coulson recited the ' Motor car l in good style, and had to respond to an encore. Vhs. Grimmond, who is an old fa\onte, was repeatedly recalled, her singing of 'Good-bje, Mavour.neen, 1 etc., being all that could be desired. Mr. J. McKay 'vas heard to advantage in ' Out on the deep,' and was honcTreld with an encoie. A Highland (lung was danced by Mr Morgan. Miss Daly plajed a piano solo in capital style. Mr. McSherry sac'ig in Ins usual finished manner ' Plymouth Sound ' Miss McGuinness (Timaru) contributed a vocal seiection and had to respond vo more than one encore. A dialogue, entitled ' Taking the census,' closed the first part of tfhe programme, the characters being taken by Misses Collins, Roberts, and Pedrazv.i. In the second part Mr Morgan danced an li'islh jig, and Mr. McCullough recited. A dialogue was the next item, the characters being taken by Aliss McCormack, Mr. Minehan, Miss Collins, and Mr. McEnroe. The entertainment was brought to a close by an American sketch, in which Mr. Morgan gave clog and long shoe dances.
The Mayor (Mr. Grimmoml) thanked the audience for tiheir attendance, and referred in glowing terms to the work dene by the good Sisters in our midst, He thought that one had only to speak to and have dealings with tjio clnldien to know by their good be-haviolur that they belonged to the convent school. FatJhcr O'Connor, qn behalt of himself and the Sistrcs, thanked ail those who had in any way contributed towards making the concert the unqualified success it was. !
Mr. Morton, Government Inspector, examined St. Patrick's School on 'inurs'day, .November 10, and expressed himself highly pleased with the results, not a single child in t,he school tailing to pass. He was aLo very pleased with the physical drill, winch the children went through under their instructor, Mr. Collins. He thought the school was second to none on the Coast in this subject The Sisters are to be highly congratulated on their success, which they well deserve.
