Denniston
(From our own correspondent.) July 28. The successful tenderers for the erection of a new church at Millerton are Messrs. Hill and Martin, of Westp.ort. The contract price (labor only) is £65. Building operations will be commenced at an early date. The Rev. Father Malloy was the celebrant at the 11 o'clock Mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart on the 19th inst. The choir rendered Weber's Mass in leally excellent style. Great praise is due to the energetic and talented organist, Miss Home, whose unflagging enthusiasm in musical matters in connection with the Church is deserving of record. A most successful and enjoyable concert and social in honor of the home-coming of Mr. and Mrs. Beirne, were held in Beirne's Hall, Waimangaroa, on the 22nd inst. Mr. J. Beirne, who is the son of Mr. V. Beirne, proprietor of the Waimangaroa Hotel, was recently married to Miss Syron in Wellington by the Rev. Father) Amsworth An attractive programme of music and song contubuted much to the enjoyment of those present. Most hearty greetings were tendered to the happy couple, who are \ery popular, and wishes expressed for a long life ol happiness and prosperity It is the intention of Mr. and Mrs. Beirne to reside at Waimangaroa.
A creditable improvement is noticeable in the work of the choir of the Sacred Heart. Practices are now held three tunes in the week, the members attending with commendable regularity. The choir has recently been sirengthened by the addition of two capable vocalists in the persons of Messrs. Cunningham and Edwards.
The township is now quite up-to-date as regards lighting by electricity. Nearly all the business establishments have the electric light installed, and it is only a matter of time when our private residences will be supplied.
As is usual at this season, there is a brisk demand for coal, and Denniston is equal to the emergency. The arrival in Westport of the steel steam collier the ' Canopus,' followed by the Admiralty's charteied vessel, ' Mercedes,' from liong Kong, has made matters particularly brisk at the mines. In a former issue I referred to Denniston as having two representatives in the New Zealand Band, now on its return from England It appears the statement was incorrect, and I now gladly make an amend by recording the fact that there are five members in the band who were formerly associated with musical matters in Denmston.
