Westport
(From our own correspondent.) July 29. His Grace the Archbishop is expected to visit Westport next month. In anticipation of his Grace's visit several candidates for Confirmation are now receiving the necessar/y instructions. The blessing of the new Convent of Mercy, and other important religious functions, will receive the attention of his Grace during his visit to this portion of the archdiocese. The new Convent of Mercy is now almost completed, and the fine edifice is admired by all. The new building is another conspicuous addition to the ecclesiastical structures of Westport. The editor of the Westport ' Evening Star ' courteously sent the press association telegram announcing the Pope's death to the Yen. Archpriest Walshe. Immediately on receipt of the news the Yen. Archpriest had the bells of St. Canice's Church tolled, and prayers Avere recited for the repose of the soul of the late illustrious Sovereign Pontiff. The announcement of the death of Dean Rolland, of Reettfcln, was received in, ! Westport-with feeling)^ of thle deepest regret by all classes of the community. A Solemn Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul was celebrated in St Canice's Church by the Yen. Archpriest Walshe.
The news of the death of our illustrious Sovereign Pontiff, Leo XIII., was received in Westport with manifestations of great sorrow on all sides. A Solemn Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul was celebrated at St. Canice's Church on Friday, the 26th inst. The Rev. Father Malloy was the celebrant. The church was appropriately draped by the Sisters of Mercy. The half-yearly meeting of St. Canice's branch of the 1-I.A C.B. Society was held in St. Canice's Schoolroom on July 22. The following officers were elected for the ensuing term : President, Bro. T. Enright jun. ; vicepresident, Bro. John Dixon ; secretary, Bro. B. R. Gap-
per ; treasurer, Bro. James Power ; assistant secretary, Bro. John Cook ; warden, Bro. John Molloy ; guardian, Bro. F. Roch& ; sick visitors, Bros. P. Galvin, Charles McKenna, and F. Calnon ; auditors, Bros. James Gallagher and James Kelly ; trustees, Bros. James Flynn, James Ryan, and James Hepburn. After installing the officers Bro. James Gallagher, the retiring president, thanked the officers and members for their hearty cooperation and assistance during his term of office. The Westport Coal Company's new steamer ' Canopus ' arrived from Newcastle-on-Tyne on the 25th inst. alter an uneventful pas&age of 57 days. The new collier has been specially constructed to suit the requirements of her owners. The ' Canopus ' has attracted considerable attention since her arrival and it is the general opinion that the vessel is admirably adapted for the coal trade.
A cable message announcing the death of Miss M. O'Brien, eldest daughter of Mr. Daniel O'Brien, of Addison's Flat, was received on the 9th inst. The deceased, who had been in business in Westport for some time past, left for Sydney several weeks ago to visit her relatives. The unexpected intelligence announcing her decease came as a great shock to her father and family, who in their sad bereavement have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in the Buller district.— R.l.
