Wellington, August 10. — The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the Agent-General, dated London, August 8:— 1 Mutton market very firm, though trade at Smithfield is quiet. Average prices to-day : Canterbury brands, 4£d per ft ; Dunedin, Southland, and W.M.E. Company, 4|d; other North Island brands, 4d ; ewes, 3Jd ; River Plate mutton, 3|d to 4d. Lamb market favorably affected by advance in mutton. Prices firmer. Average price today : Canterbury brands, s|d per ft ; brands other than Canterbury, s|d ; legs, 4|d ; River Plate lamb, 4£d. Beef : Market steadier. Hindquarters New Zealand beef quoted 4£d per ft ; fores, 2£d. Better demand for New Zealand butter. Average prices : Choicest to-day, 95s per cwt ; Danish, 103s ; Canadian, 93s ; Siberian, 95s ; Argentine, 935. Cheese market firmer. Average prices : Finest New Zealand, 51s per cwt (fair demand for consignments ex Papanui) ; Canadian, 48s to 495.
