SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL, CHRISTCHURCH.
(From our own correspondent.)
On Thursday afternoon, December 14, his Lordship the Right Rev. Dr. Grimes distributed the prizes to the. pupils of the Sacred Heart Convent High School, conducted by^ the Sisters of the Mission. There was a very large gathering present
including the Very Rev. Father Le Menant des Chesnais, V.Gk, and the Rev. Fathers Marnane, Crotty, and Richards. Prior to the distribution of the prizes an excellent entertainment, consisting of a high class concert and a cantata, was given by the pupils, who acquitted themselves admirably, reflectingoredit on themselves and on their painstaking and devoted teachers. The music was of exceptional merit, Gounod's ' Aye Maria,' on two violins, harp, organ, and piano, being a particularly fine contribution. A pleasing departure from the accustomed ' drama ' was the substitution of a very pretty cantata, entitled ' The Flower Queen,' in which the young people seemed to fairly revel, singing and. acting in a manner whioh showed they had been very carefully instructed. The scenery and dresses were very pretty. After the prize list was read by the Very Rev. Father Le Menant des Chesnais, his Lordship the Bishop, addressing the children and assembled guests, said it was pleasing and gratifying to him to preside once again, at the annual prize distribution of the ably conducted convent schools. Last year and the year before he was of course absent. He eulogised the musical performance of the pupils, and congratulated the Sisters on the very favourable report of the school inspector, mentioning incidentally the fact of a member of the Educatiun Board, and now of the House of Representatives, paying a surprise visit to the Convent school, when he was in turn surprised at the wide scope of the teaching, and confessing that prior to his visit he was impressed with the idea that besides religion little else was taught. Many, said his Lordship, outside the Church knew and appreciated the thorough training imparted by the Sisters, and this accounted for the numbers who sent their children to be educated at the Convent schools. He congratulated the children on their successful studies, the parents on having such devoted and highly trained teachers in their midst, concluding by wishing each and every one all the joys and gladness of the approaching festive season. A visit to the art and fancy work departments revealed a splendid display of exhibits comprising paintings in oils and water colours, pen and pencil work, crayon drawings, most naturallooking fruit and flowers fashioned in wax, etc. The various exhibits showed a distinct advance on former years, a noticeable feature being the number of native subjects treated in oils and water colours, the southern lake scenery coming in for a large •hare of attention. This section owe& much of its success to the present talented instructor. The plain sewing, fancy work, and lace manufacture, Bhowed much taste, diligence, and industry, the articles made by the Kindergarten pupils being exceptionally good and most favourably commented upon by all present.
