OBITUARY.

MR. JAMES MACKAY, OAMARU. It is with feelings of deep regret we have to announce the death of Mr. James Mackay, brother of the Very Rev. Dean Mackay, which occurred at his residence, Aln street, Oamaru, on Friday. The deceased, who was 68 years of age, came out to Tasinama in ISSS and left that colony for New Zealand in 1862. He was well known in Otago as the chief partner in the firms who carried out several large works in this provincial district. Among the buildings erected by the firm in Dunedin were the Anglican Cathedral, the Colonial Bank, the High School, and Post Office. They also carried out the following works in this and the neighbouring: provincial districts :-The Port Chalmers graving dock, the Lyttelton graving dock, the bridge over the Clutha and the railway to Clinton the railway from Waipahi to Tapanui, also the dredging of Dunedin harbour. The remains were taken from the deceaseds late residence to St. Patrick's Basilica, Oamaru, on Sunday afternoon, and on Monday morning at 6.30 o'clock they were taken to the railway station and brought on to Dunedin for interment. Although the hour at which the funeral left the Basihoa was an early one still there was a large gathering of mourner^ many of whom came on to Dunedin, among these being the Very Rev. Dean Mackay (brother) and the Rev. Fathers Ryan and Howard. On the. arrival of the train here, the funeral started for the Catholxa portion of the Southern Cemetery, where the interment took place. The eorteqe was a representative one, and showed t*e respect in which the deceased had been held by the people of this city. Besides the clergy already mentioned there were afco present the Very Rev. Mgr. Hoyne, V.G. (Ballarat), Very Rev. Father Brown, SJ Very Rev J. O'Neill (Milton), and Rev. Fathers Murphy (Ad'm.), Coffey," Cleary, E. O'Donnell, T. Kelsh (Tasmania), 3.3. Lynch (Palmerston), and McMullan cPort Chalmers). The service at the graveside" was conducted by the Rev. Father Murphy, assisted by the other c ergy present. — U.I P.
