ALL-ROUNDER
= A KIND of miniature David Rose" is the way Johnny Williams describes his orchestra (above) of wood-
wind, muted brass and strings, whose music in a light rvth-
mic. style is heard from 2YA on Wednesday evenings. Though Johnny has always been interested in dance bands and will be remembered as a player in
Freddie Gore’s Orchestra-he did a number of sessions with the American vocalist Marion Waite-he is something of an all-rounder. At home with the clarinet, flute and saxophone, he has played, for instance, with the Kiwi Concert Party, and on the other hand can be seen helping out on occasions in the percussion section of the National Orchestra. In The Kiwis, in, the years
1951 to 1953, he used to share first clarinet with another Wellington dance band leader, Don Richardson. Johnny has also done a lot of orchestration, which kept him very busy while he was with The Kiwis. The vocalist with Johnny’s orchestra of 15 players is John Hoskins, whose specialty is aaa ballads.
