Coal and Slack Dust

Dear Aunt Daisy, I wonder if you can help with my little problem through your weekly column in The Listener? We have a good quantity of coal slack and would like to make some form of briquettes to make use of it in our closed stove this winter. The question is what to mix with it. I hope you or one of the "Chain" will know the answer. I always turn to your column and find many

helpful hints and recipes.-

The easiest way to use up the coal dust is to fill up a shovel and sprinkle it all over with a little finely-crushed washing soda. Empty the shovelful of dust then gently on the fire. This gives a bright and lasting fire. Or try dissolving a handful of washing soda in 2 quarts of water and spreading or pouring it over a sackful of coal dust or slack; then fill it into paper bags, ready to pick up and use to bank up your fire. The only recipe I have for making briquettes is not very practical, and involves mixing sawdust and flour paste and kerosene; the above methods are simple and effective. You will find these all in my book of Handy Hints.
